Chapter Nine
Rosalie’s peel of laughter had been a sweet enough sound to relieve some of the startled pain that had sliced through Julian like a knife when she had rejected him. It had taken him a moment to realize that the little wretch had been playing with him and he had looked at her with incredulous indignation that had lasted as long as it had taken for her to cup his face between her hands and kiss him once again.
‘I am sorry,’ she breathed against his lips when she finally drew back, ‘but I could not resist! You are so very assured in all things female; I surrendered to my quite shocking desire to tease you. And at such a time. Do you forgive me, dearest?’
‘You are a horrible woman,’ he murmured, holding her firmly against him. He could forgive her anything as long as she continued to look at him in such a way. ‘You gave me the devil of a scare.’
‘Yes, well you deserved some kind of punishment after that shameless performance upstairs.’ She sobered, looking up at him earnestly. ‘You are serious? You really wish to marry me?’
‘More than anything I have ever wished for before,’ he assured her softly. ‘Dearest Rosalie, you have my heart. You will always have my heart and if you will marry me I shall do anything in my power to make you happy.’
‘I like the sound of that,’ she decided demurely. ‘When do you intend to ask Papa?’
‘Is he in today?’
She laughed at that, although it was a little breathless. ‘I believe he is in his study, actually.’
‘Then I must beg an audience with him immediately.’
Another kiss, even more heated than the last. His head was swimming with Rosalie; the scent of her, the taste and touch of her… She filled his senses completely and he wanted to spend the rest of his life with his arms wrapped around her. Unfortunately they were likely to be discovered by some disconcerted housemaid at any minute. It was a wonder they hadn’t been already. Instead, Rosalie took him by the hand and led him quietly back up the stairs, turning in different direction to the one to that of Lady Wortham, moving swiftly until they stood outside a closed door. He grinned at her. Now that he had her willing participation in the venture, all of his confidence had returned. He knew he could manage the forthcoming interview without misstep. The earl liked him well enough and he, at least, would probably be pleased that his daughter had found a man she liked enough to marry.
He turned to Rosalie, smoothing his thumb across her bottom lip. ‘I love you.’
Her smile was glorious. ‘And I, you. I always sensed I would fall in love with a reprobate and it seems that I have done so.’
‘Former reprobate,’ he chided her. ‘I turned over a new leaf the day I met you.’
‘Not too much I hope,’ she murmured with a sultry look that left him a little breathless.
